Punta Arenas is the capital of Magallanes province which comprehends from Cordillera del Paine on the north to Cape Horn on the south. Regarded as the world's southernmost city, Punta Arenas looks across the Strait of Magellan to Tierra del Fuego and is the door to Patagonia standing only 3 hour bus from Puerto Natales.
The city once hosted tattered sailors, miners, seal hunters, starving pioneers and wealthy dandies of the wool boom. Today, Punta Arenas became the urban, commercial, cultural and social center that spread all over Magallanes, geared toward tourism and industry. It's a cosmopolitan city, with its surprisingly energetic nightclubs and people from all profiles mixed such as Chilean air force personnel, centolla (king crab) fishermen and suit-clad businessmen.
