Portobelo

Portobello, an example of the colonial era in Panama!

Portobello city

This quiet fishing village was once a thriving city and the largest Spanish port in Central America. Gold from Peru and the treasures of the East were brought to Panama City and carried overland on mules to the fortress of Portobello.

From the times of its former greatness, the city has preserved magnificent examples of colonial architecture, residential and administrative buildings and churches, which in their beauty would decorate any city in the country. And this is despite the fact that during its existence the city was repeatedly attacked and destroyed by English pirates. The ruins of numerous forts have been preserved in the vicinity of the city, although there are several completely preserved ones. In one of the churches of the city there is a statue of the “black Jesus”, which thousands of believers come to worship every year
